at 9am, 1 goes south at 60mph and the other goes at 45mph, how far apart are they at noon?
please show all steps & work.
it has to do with the pythagorean theorem.

What direction did the second car go? If it's east or west, then here's the answer:

By noon, car 1 has traveled 180 miles and car 2 has traveled 135 miles (multiply each speed by three hours). Then plug into the Pythagorean Theorem:

c^2 = a^2 + b^2
c = sqrt(a^2 + b^2)
c = sqrt(180^2 + 135^2)
c = sqrt(32400 + 18225)
c = sqrt(50625)
c = 225 miles

You didn't say what direction the second car went. But since you say "it has to do with the pythagorean theorem", I'll assume that the second car went due east or due west. I'll also assume that both cars were leaving from the same place.

Noon comes 3 hours after the starting time of 9AM. So in 3 hours, the first car is 60*3 = 180 miles south of the starting point. After the same time, the second car is 45*3= 135 miles east (or west) of the starting point.

If you draw this out, you can create a triangle with the starting point, new placement of the first car, and new placement of the second car. This triangle is a right triangle, with the right angle at the starting point. So the distance between the cars is the hypotenuse. The legs of the triangle are 180 and 135. So use Pythagoras to find the distance between the two cars now.

Since you say it has to do with the Pythagorean theorem, I assumme the 2nd car is traveling either due East of due West. At noon , car 1 will have traveled 60*3 = 180 miles and car 2 will have traveled 45*3 = 135 miles.

Their distance apart will be the hypotenuse of a right triangle and so will be sqrt(180^2+135^2) = 225 miles

That is a easy one if I get it right ok
9am lets say noon is 5pm that is 8 hours between those two times so 60 times 8 whitch = 480 subract 60 from 80 and + 1 to 4 witch = 5:20 So for the person who goes 60mph it takes 5hours and 20min.
8 times 45 = 3:60 subtract 60 from 60 add 1 to 3 4:00
so the awnser is 1 hour 20min

Hi. Car 1 has gone 60 times 3 miles (one leg of your triangle). Car 2 has gone 45 times 3 miles (second leg of your triangle). Find the hypotenuse.
