I want to get rid of an old computer tower and want to completely wipe off the memory.

to clean off/wipe off a HD... Open the computer, get a wet towl. Locate the HD. Pull it out and wipe it off. Reinsert HD.

Ok to the real question, If you have the windows cd, or a linux cd start up thecomputer with them (or a startup disk) and format your HD. There are also tools that will completely earase your hd that cost money though.

The best way is to use a magnet to erase everything. Alternatively, you could use a program like http://dban.sourceforge.net/ . You could also open up the hard drive and touch the platter (rendering it useless because it has oil from your finger on it), but that requires a Torx screwdriver.

Formatting will erase all your information, including the operating system, but the data is still physically on the hard drive, and there are ways to recover it.

load it into a mobil rack in other pc and use {sure delete}its a software which make a many many copy of a useless data on your hard and erase it so no one can restore it
or use any shred software which make the data little pieces and ofcource no one can recover it

You get dban for free and run it http://dban.sourceforge.net/
This will wipe out all traces of your personal info.
I use this myself, it's slow, but effective and more secure than just formatting and reinstalling.

you get a 20 dollar disk wiping program, 200 dollar windows xp full, run the disk wiper, then reinstall windows.

just download a bootdisk or boot floppy ... boot from it and fdisk the partitions ..
