When it comes to a tank you need to choose one that will fit your lifestyle and that once you fill it with water you can't move it so choose where you want it to go wiseley! Tanks come in many different sizes. From those tiny torture bowls that should not be used to keep fish in at all to huge 100 gallon tanks that are much bigger and take more maintanance but hold more fish. The most important lesson that I have learned, is that you should always research your fish before you buy them. Including their adult full size, you should make sure that you have enough space for them or you will stunt them and cause thwem to die earlier. And make sure that they are compatible, which means that you need to choose fish that won't fight or eat eachother. For example, you can't keep bala sharks in with neon tetras. And don't go buying this big expensive fish that cost 100$ when you are new to this hobby because not only will the fish die from your lack of knolw=edge but you will also waste alot of money which is why you should only get them when you are more experienced and another eason hwy you should research your fish. By the way you need a heater if you are keeping tropical fish. Gravel, plants, and decorations can also be put if you want, to make the tank look nice. Most tropical fish need a temp ranging anywhere from 76 - 82 degrees. Also cleaning your tank takes time so make sure you do it when you have time to. Change out 10 - 20% of the water once a week. and scrub off all the algea off the walls of glass.

When your fish is sick make sure to diagnose correctly or you're just dumping a bunch of unneeded chemicals into the tank and killing your fish.

Also, don't just dump your fish in the tank. Acclimate them slowly by floating the bag in the water you are going to put them in for about 10-20 minutes. another bit of advice is to start with one fish in the tank to build up the bacteria in your filter, which you will need, of course. This bacteria is good and it turns the ammonia in the fish turd into nitrate and nitrite that makes it safe for the fish though nitrate and nitrite that are too high can kill your fish. That is why you need to have a water testing kit that you can buy at the pet supply store near you. They will come in strips or drops and come with instructions. Good luck and hope this helps.

there are different sizes of tanks and if you want your fish to be happy and your tank to look good you should add gravel of some kind. if youre a beginner then start with a smaller tank and something easy like goldfish or guppies and eventually work your way into harder fish and bigger tanks. you can add plant if you want(fake or real) and your fish wil have something to hide in so they will be happier. good luck!

Start with "Aquariums for Dummies" there is too much to the hobby to put on here. You need a manual, and I'd read it before you buy anything. It takes work, dedication, and a little know how, to house fish properly.

The best advice that anyone can give you is to read as much about them as you can, and try to find someone in your area (a GOOD fish store, and aquarium club, another experienced hobbyist) that you can trust to help you out (not just sell you stuff).

Here are a few good links with lots of info for fresh and saltwater, since you didn't specify which:

Don't ever try to move one (even a little bit) when it's full. They can crack easily. If you have to move it, empty it first.
