It depends what you mean by life. In science there are a number of criteria which are used to define what has life and what does not , such as the ability to maintain an internal environment. To religion life seems to refer to a state of existence for an individual, whether in a physical state or not. In popular culture life seems to be defined more by quality than quantity, whether you enjoy life or get what you want rather than how much of life you have experienced, therefore, for many the unborn baby or the single cell amoeba doesn't have a life worth preserving. For most I think life is defined by what we experience and given a very subjective value that varies from person to person.
