May be the question is wrong. People are not so crazy with cricket as they are with football. Cricket crazy you might find only in India and you feel more because India has such a big population and Cricket is not a very costly game and you can play even in a small space. Come to Europe or US and see how people are crazy for football. Almost everyone.

1.The media creates an interest,thinking that people are interested,and the people who want to keep up with the joneses,swim with the tide,tend to feel that this is something everyone's going for,so might as well join,so cricket's in positive feedback amplitude(to borrow a simile from electronics).
2.it's a game which is not very demanding in terms of stamina,strength or undue athletic skills,so we Indians,who are not very inclined towards physical activity find it quite easy on the body,all activity in cricket comes in fits and starts,u take a run,rest,then play again,in fielding also,if you are in slips,you can actually stand and do nothing,if the ball doesn't come your way.
It's remarkable that only we south asians have taken to cricket in such a big way.The reason's,i'am afraid,is the fact that cricket suits our lazy disposition,helps us to waste time,5 full days or 1 full day,and allows us to yak,yak,yakand yak while playing,commenting or simply watching
3.Vast swathes of asia,africa,south america,europe are immune to cricket even though the British took them all over the world,whereas the other British export,soccer's played all over the world,even in Britain,there are more people watching,say,1st division club matches (premier league's no comparison) than test/one-day cricket,there's more attendance for teams from sub-continent because then the NRS(non resident south asians) fill up the stadia!!
Friends,my sincere request to everyone reading this answer is to downplay the importance of cricket in our lives,relegate cricket to a lazy sunday/saturday afternoon game,take interest in other sports like hockey,remember we were 9 times World Champions(we have won the cricket world cup only once).Please note that V.Anand earns much much more than Sachin simply by playing,hardly any endorsements.Our future generations can become multi-millionaires,if they can find their place in starting line-ups of Europe's champion soccer clubs,without any endorsements/advertisements.Crores(in rupees) await the winners of track and field meets,or tennis championships in Europe.So there's much more money in other sports and what's more ,we can bring forex to India,today our companies have to spend forex for advertisements/sponsorships of cricket tournaments.The entire sponsorships of World Cup cricket is by Indian/India based companies,think of outflow of forex,
hence friends let's resolve to show cricket its due place,which is in the corner/attic to be taken out once in a while when we want be lazy,relax and give our limbs much needed rest from soccer/hockey/athletics.
