Consumerism can be thought of as a moral issue if one takes into account that purchasing an item can have an effect on more than just the purchaser. An incredible amount of waste is generated in production that has a tremendous impact on the places where we live. Furthermore, consumerism drives a machine that causes people to take advantage/exploit others. Due to social norms, marketing and advertising, consumers are no longer are able to distinguish between needs and wants. From an environmental standpoint, a great way to completely deplete a natural resource or cripple an ecosystem is to take more than you need. Whether this is a moral issue can be thought of in terms of impact. Is it moral to negatively impact another person's quality of life to improve your own through material goods?

I try to be as responsible a consumer as I can, given my current knowledge, but I have no qualms about buying something nice if I want it. And I don't care what society wants me to feel. It's not society's life.
