Depends. In the west, it is a combination of a christian event, and pre-christian spring festivals. You can take your pick.

Easter is the celebration of life in full bloom. Rabbits and eggs are both symbols of the fertility goddess Eostre/Ishtar/Ostara. Her symbol is also the moon, in which some cultures see a rabbit instead of a face. Eggs also symbolize the moon and are the ultimate symbol of creation and new life. The basket is a symbol of the womb in which this new life is carried.
The feast day is pagan and was widely celebrated way before the time of Jesus. Like pretty much all holidays, it was adopted by Christians to help get more converts. However, since the point is to celebrate new life and the hope of continuance, Christian symbols of a Resurrection day and the old pagan symbols mean the same thing. Just like Christmas, we are all celebrating the same thing, just using different symbols.

The word Easter comes strait from the Goddess of fertility Eostre and Easter was based on the pre-Christian holiday of Ostara.Sense Ostara is the day earth resurrects or blooms the young Christian faith made it a day to resurrect there Jesus Christ character from the now famous book "the bible".But they kept allot of the Goddess Eostre and her eggs around to help convert the heathens.

Good question! The true meaning of Easter is not eggs and candy. God the Father sent his only Son to die for the whole world's sin. After three days in a grave, Jesus rose again and had victory over death. And you know what?! Five hundred people saw him ALIVE! Oh, by the way, it isn't Easter, it's Ressurection Day!
God bless you in your quest for Him!

the second answer is right, half way.
Yes, it was origionally a pagan celebration. It had been goin on for hundreds of years before Christ was even on earth. But, the Catholic church, not sure what time, wanted to get people to come into church, so they combined the pagan celbration with the Christian celebration.
The Christian celebration of Easter is to celebrate Jesus coming back from the dead after he was killed on the Cross.

Easter is to celebrate the rising of Jesus from the tomb. And we continue to celebrate it to show that he kept his promise. It is like having a favorite song and you will play it to remember someone. We celebrate Easter to remember Jesus who died for our sins.
