utter rubbish!
you sir, are a liar.
the war in iraq has nothing whatever to do with the 9/11 attacks, american security or the broader war on terror.
and the sooner you understand that the better.
americans are way out ahead of the parasitic politicians on this issue and are beginning to understand that anyone who tries to replace reason and logic with fear the way this guy does IS A RADICAL!

Aslan,
We defend muslims in general. We don't want to see concentration camps for muslims or muslims being killed just because of their religion. You can be a liberal muslim or a conservative/fundamentalist muslim. The fundie muslim is the real threat, but I still don't want to see people persecuted just because of their religion. That is unamerican.
Now, this liberal, understands, that it seems that the majority of muslims are social conservatives. That is an ideology I do not agree with. I believe the best way to defeat this ideology is not to bomb people (and create more terrorists). The best way to defeat fundamentalism is with liberalism. We need to somehow push middle eastern society to accept secular government and secular schools. We need to support the muslim feminists, secularists, and humanists.
Being a fundie is not written into the Koran. Back in the Dark Ages, christians were doing some pretty backward things but still using the same Bible today's christians used today.
The book didn't change. The interpretation did.

The Muslim world isn't just one group. Liberals don't support the Muslim groups that want to end the western world (which is liberal, thank you for pointing that truth out and admitting it... and liberalism is what makes it so advanced and great.)
What we want to do is round up the terrorists, educate the rest of the Muslim world, make sure that they're not forced (or feel forced) into a situation where they feel that blowing themselves up is a good thing, and actually try solving the problems that cause terrorism in the first place.
Why does the conservative mind see that as a bad thing? What condition causes the conservative mind to see everyone with a basic, general trait as all being part of the same group without any variance?

Fanatical muslims live in VERY CONSERVATIVE societies. They are against pretty much all that we take for granted in the US-- that includes what LIbs AND what Cons stand for. In fact, some countries have the death penalty for turning away from Islam. How's that for being conservative?
Libs in the US and for that matter any reasonable people, don't want us to condemn ALL muslims as some seem to want to do. Our constitution has freedom of religion spelled out in it-- yes, that includes Islam. Reasonable people don't want to see crimes committeed against law abiding people in this country.
Starting peace talks? I don't see an issue with the US starting them somewhere-- It goes along with being the better nation, better people. Seeking peace and coexistance is a NOBLE cause. Much more noble than invading places like Iraq which presented little threat to us. Afghanistan is a different story.

I'm not FOR or AGAINST muslims, but I do empathize with them in a logical and dispassionate manner.
We have supported regimes like the Shah (whose predecessor we helped oust in the cold war), we helped give palestinian land to the Jews to form Israel, we supported Israel through the process with unbelievable amounts of aid and not very well disguised gunboat diplomacy, we sold arms to Iran, we sold arms to Saddam, Beirut peacekeeping, bases in Saudi Arabia, withheld financial support that we gave to non muslim countries, we attacked Iraq in all opposition to logic and reality, and... the list could go on.
I'm NOT defending them - but try to see it from their side for a minute. They have valid points and to simply poo poo all of them as a people because of 9/11 is just silly.
I do not agree they should be violent towards anyone - ever. But the fact remains they view us, not just liberals, but the US as a whole, as enormous bullies who don't get our noses out of their collective business. They have tremendous income disparity not because they earned it, but because of what particular piece of land they were fortunate/unfortunate enough to be born on. This kind of extreme differences makes a big difference in the perception people have. Add to that the helpless, powerless feeling when our military shows it's head. They know we could wipe them all out with a push of a few buttons, or invade them and cause havoc as we have in Iraq. These kinds of things have profound and significant effects on a persons perspective.
People will be people and a person tends to be who they are by their upbringing. The fact is they are centuries behind us in thought, tolerance, and acceptance of difference - but that does not mean we should disparage them or attack them without good reason. We need to be extra careful not to be bullies and show a good example. Lead by example of how we want to be treated is more logical in the long run.
It's more of a matter of perspective than anything else. Walk a mile in another mans shoes and you'll understand that man better.

"All we ever did was beat them out of money and messed with their politics".
No,that's not all,but that would be quite the way to get somebody to start hating you, huh?
But it's an absolute lie when conservatives accuse liberals of supporting terrorists. We're all for the war in Afghanistan, which should have been won and over five years ago.We just have a problem when our government invents a war in a place that had nothing to with 9/11,and creates thousands and thousands of new terrorists because of that war.

OK, time for a little history:
The U.S supported the shah of Iran for decades, and he was far more oppressive and brutal to his own people than Saddam Hussein ever dreamed of being.
The U.S. ousted the King of Afghanistan and put the Taliban into power so they could fight the Russians. Now we are clearing out the Taliban, our own creation. These are just two of many examples.
Saddam Hussein was our best friend for all the years of the Iran/Iraq wars. hmmmm.....
By supporting unpopular (to their victims) and despotic regimes we did in fact cause severe loss of life.
By supporting mega-corporate colonialism we are relegating these countries to continued third world status.
I find it amusing that while Europe was in the "dark ages", Islam was the bastion of science and the home of tolerance for so many years it was ridiculous. modern Muslim fanaticism is a relatively recent occurrence, one that most Muslims i know find perplexing.

they are no longer fanatical volatile muslims. they are merely international locations run by ability of governments like all different. If usa stopped making enemies international extensive with our consistent policing we does no longer would desire to ask or answer this question. Oil, besides as all products, would desire to be traded freely between all international locations. No sanctions, no terrifs, no discrimination. commerce, return and forth, peace, and prosperity would desire to be the way of the international.

I'm afraid you're confused about liberalism and liberals. Liberalism in the classic sense is the freedom of thought and action. Western civilization is unique in the world in that people are free to submit ideas and have them criticized, improved on or rejected by others, without fear. This is the basis of the scientific method, and is why western civilization and its political-economic system, capitalism, has fostered so much creativity and been so successful in raising the standard of living of all who are part of it. Contrast this to the Muslim world, or any tribal society in which, from the day you're born, you are bound to accept certain doctrines as true. Defy these doctrines and you risk your freedom or your life. It's precisely this freedom of thought and action which most threatens the Muslim world, and why they seek to destroy us. Because if you have the freedom to have good thoughts and actions, you have the freedom to have bad ones as well. Islam denies free will.
Modern day liberals - the Michael Moores of the world - hate freedom of thought. Just disagree with them or see how freedom of speech is being suppressed on many college campuses if you don't accept the politically left doctrines. In a sense, then, they are closer to Islamic thinking than those of the classic liberals, who embrace freedom of thought and are called fascists for it.

sheesh Aslan you have a rather shallow view of American culpability for Muslim suffering. the USA feeds Israel BILLIONS of dollars in welfare and high tech weaponry and supports Israel in whatever heinous genocidal expansionist tactic they decide to employ against their Muslim neighbors. the Palestinian suffer under horrendous conditions and look what Israel did to Lebanon in pursuit of the Latani River. cluster bombs on civilians, fer crise sake!
so don't imagine that Muslim angst is generated by our shrinking liberties. Muslims hate us because we're imperialistic and support Israel's "chosen people" justification for cruelty.
i don't speak for all Liberals, of course but NO i do not support the Israeli gov. i have nothing against the Israeli People or Jews in general but i resent that my tax dollars goes to Israel to be used to oppress and kill their neighbors. and what has Israel done for us lately? anything?
