I’m working in a Muslim country. In 2005 a Sunni man saved me from kidnappers and we’ve become like brothers. This Sunni has two wives. One, he secretly married for love when he was 24 (Wife1); and one he married publicly 10 years later according to tribal tradition (Wife2). He has 3 children with both wives.

Recently, Wife2 discovered his secret Wife1. Because my friend falsified his marriage contract with Wife2, by not disclosing Wife1, she’s returned to her father’s house with their children. In this country, Wife2 can’t remarry.

My friend loves both his families and asked me to help him. I appealed to the mothers of both wives for a plan to divide of my friend’s time, affections and money between the two wives, and Wife2 has agreed to submit to the mothers. I really care about all these people. Have I done the right thing?

As I understand, the laws over there say this is legal as long as the wives know about each other (I could be wrong). I think you did the right thing. You reuunited a family, and helped smooth over the hurt feelings. You are an awesome friend, and if I ever find myself with two husbands, I'm calling you to work out the details lol.

If it will keep the families together, then yes I think it was the right thing. I guess I just wonder how he managed to keep wife #1 a secret form wife #2 for so long. Did wife #1 know about wife #2?
This situation is better than wife #2 having to live her life without a husband.

It truly seems like you are trying to help your friend, so yes, you are doing the right thing. It may not work out they way you planned but you are putting forth the effort to help the person you care about. This situation is a little on the crazy side and it must be difficult to work though, but be there for your friend and that is all he can really ask for in the end.

Caring about these people is definitely never a mistake.

But wow......that is one big freaking mess!

What a great testimony to why only one wife is enough!
