This is quite a question. Roman army for example was the most efficient for more then 300 years!!! I don't think that any army can boost with something like that. They had platoon compositions called "pig" and protected themselves covering the troops by their shields, creating a wall and a roof out of them. Ukrainian freedom fighters called cossacs were also feared by many nations. There are historical facts proving, that a division of cossacs consisting of about 8,000 men defeated a Polish army that had 35,000 with the fact that cossacs had no cavalry. And what about Saxonian knights that were wearing silver shields and golder hats. And with all of that they had a chance to swirl with a 50 pounds of steel as their swords! Isn't that amazing!!!

Depending on your point of view, but I would say the Red Army from 1920-1945.

The Mongols in the thirteenth and fourteenth centuries.

The Grand Army in France in the early nineteenth century.

Although there were many successes and failures in all of these examples mentioned.

I should also be noted that they were all responsible for terrible war crimes!!

The German Army of World War II was definitely one of the most fearless in history. Think of the motivation and determination, unique to the Nazi ideology.

While they may not be THE most magnificent and fearless in history, certainly they were the best of World War II.
