Toshiba makes very good laptops in my opinion. I had a Toshiba 5200 several years ago which would still be better in terms of quality and features than my brand new Dell 6400.

My suggestion, stay away from Dell

Well I recently got a Laptop for School ;-) and plays great quality games to. HP dv6000. Its a bit expensive though.

I recommend these Customize specs:
2GB of ram
120GB Hard drive
256MB NVIDIA(R) GeForce(R) Go 7200
AMD Turion(TM) 64 X2 Dual-Core TL-561.8ghz or 2.0ghz

or you could always go to a best buy or Frys and look for a cpu with a high end grahics card
nvidia and ati

Affordable and powerful enough to play games are somewhat difficult to combine in a laptop than a desktop.

Affordable ones would usually have integrated graphics. They are good for 2D but sucks in 3D. In any case, stay away from Intel integrated graphics and go for ATI.

The laptops that are better for gaming would have Nvidia's Go 7300 or 7400. They are definitely much better than integrated graphics but the laptops having them may not be so affordable.
Here's a link to Nvidia's Go 7300, 7400.

Well, I have a Toshiba Satellite A105 series laptop that came with 512 mb ram, wifi capabilities, 4 usb pots, 15.4 in wide screen, modem, ethernet, S-video out, and vga monitor connection, and express card slot.. I love it.. use it all the time, and, of course, I have upgraded it to 1gb ram.
oh, and has a 60 gb hard drive.. as well as dvd/cd rw...
you can probably get it with the dvd writer as well.

I would recommend this from cyberpowerPC. It has free shipping, an excellent AMD processor, a video card with dedicated 256Mb video memory, a webacam, and much more!
It also has all of this free stuff-Dark messiah, Rise of nations:rise of legends, age of empuires 3, a t shirt, and a carrying case.
Support is also excellent-a 3yr warranty and tech support for ur entire life.

Dells and Macs are great for college students but I really like Gateway.

Gateway definitely. I have a HP and there is a lot of problems with it. My sister has a Gateway and she hasn't had any problems.

I don't know what to recommend, but don't get an IBM! I have one and I absolutely hate it.
