Others have answered the question already, but I wanted to contribute an interesting historical footnote on the conversion factor.
USED TO BE TRUE: the meter is defined relative to the wavelength of a particular EMR and the centimeter was just .01 times the length of a meter. The conversion between centimeter and inch used to be very slightly higher than 2.54:1.
NOW: about 15 years ago the inch was redefined to be exactly 2.54 centimeters.
SO..? That means that once 2.54:1 was just a good approximation, today it is exactly right.

1 inch is best estimated as 2.54 cm. This is the standard conversion unit between length in the customary system and length in the metric system. Anything else is just a worse approximation.
So to convert centimeters to inches, divide the number of centimeters by 2.54. To convert feet to meters, realize that 2.54 cm is 0.0254 meters by definition, and 1 foot is 12 inches by definition. So take the number of feet and multiply by (12)(0.0254), which is 0.3048.
