So every once in a while should I load my battery, charge it, and drain it to keep it's life, or doesn't it mattr i it is drained and not plugged in?

No. That's an old wives tale from the days when they used NiCad batteries. NiMh and Lithium ion batteries don't work that way.

It is always good to run your laptop off the battery and drain it, then recharge it completely from time to time. This helps the battery retain it's "memory" of where full charge and full depletion is. Your battery will have longer life if you do this.

Of course you should get plugged as much as possible. Let your friend take it out when you are charged; that way, you can concentrate on other things.
