When u get fraction problems like this, the thing you should think of is getting rid of fractions. The more you get rid of the better. So here's how I went though it:
x/12 - 1/3 = 5/6
(x-4)/12 = 5/6 (I got rid of 1/3 by multiplying both denominator and numerator by 4, making the denominator 12, now we can combine the fractions)
x-4 = 10 (Multiply 12 by both sides to elimate the fraction)
x = 14 (Add 4 to both sides)

x=14. Take all 3 fractions and make them have common denominators....12. 12/3=4 so 1/3=4/12......5/6=10/12...............14/12-4/12=10/12 which when reduced equals 5/6
