A Confederacy of Dunces by John Kennedy Toole is my favorite. It's the only book I've ever read that I was a little sad as I got towards the end because I didn't want it to be over.

2. Anything by C.S. Lewis
3. The Great Gatsby - F. Scott Fitzgerald
4. The Scarlet Letter - Nathaniel Hawthorne
5. Anything by Agatha Christie

If you like books that have sequels, you might like Odd Thomas the first in a sequence by Dean R. Koontz, the second book is Forever Odd, and the 3rd is Brother Odd. (Hope I got those in the right sequence) Anyway, Odd will have you hooked.

I am a Prof of Literature and, like you (obviously enough, given my job!) I love books too.
I could write a list of ten thousand great books here but, if I could recommend only two, then they would be:
1/ The Count of Monte Cristo
2/ Catch 22
Check them out. Good luck.
