There was a time when I thought it wouldn't be all that bad if McCain were to be elected. Sure he is conservative as hell, but he could be counted on to stand up to some really stupid things and talk honestly.

But after wondering the market in Bagdad and declaring that it was such a safe place all the while surrounded by a full combat company complete with helicopter gunships overhead I realize he will be willing to lie just as much as Bush and Cheney. No more credibility at all.

I was all for McCain in '80 and lost faith in the Republican Party when they backed Bush instead. I similarly lost faith in the Democratic Party when they backed Kerry instead of Edwards, four years later.

I've still got a lot of respect For John McCain but I'm afraid he's lost some of his magic due to the natural force of aging.

I certainly take exception to Mystic's comment about him choosing the safe haven of prison. Yes he had the chance of early release because his father was Commander of the Pacific Fleet (?). But instead he stood by the code of conduct and honor, First In, First Out.

I can't imagine anyone who has any knowledge of POW treatment thinking that was the easy way out. As to his promotion; all prisoners receive promotion to the next grade when they have sufficient time 'in grade' to be eligible. This only does not apply if the person is listed as MIA. In that instance they will be promoted when their POW status becomes known.

McCain was not an exception and some POW's received promotion of more than one grade.

McCain is old, man... the old guy really doesn't know what he's talking about anymore and I feel bad for him.

The people aren't getting any better. The place isn't better. Bombs are going off daily killing innocent people, and killing our troops.

Oil production and electricity production is down 20% than pre-war production.

Baghdad is a tough place to be right now. It could be understandable if he says that "it's a though fight but the troops are working harder to secure Baghdad and make it possible for people to go about their daily lives and improvements are being made daily."

It's just plain stupid to say it's safe in Baghdad. If it's so safe why are we sending more troops?

Sometimes this whole thing is just a matter of common sense Senator.

McCain is attempting to get elected. he will say and do some thing at this factor. McCain and Bush (McBush) have fed this u . s . a lot incorrect information on Iraq and many voters do no longer difficulty to get the data. they're declaring that the surge is operating - it is debateable. we've torn up a rustic that we in no way must have invaded and occupied. We were lied into war and now McBush needs us to be at liberty about the success of the surge.

Why not have higher goals after 8 long years of the Dumbya Coup instead of someone who, at best, would be marginally better than Dictator Dumbya. To have ANY Democrat elected there will have to be HONEST elections. Why not work for THAT now, while there is still a chance.

McCain lost his credibility with me when I learned that he was offered his freedom from the prison camp, yet refused to leave his fellow prisoners.
Did he feel a greater allegiance to them over his Country...or, did he feel safer there than returning home and facing being sent back to battle in Viet Nam.
He spent nearly the entire war in that prison camp, and for that 'service' he prides himself, was decorated as a hero, and promoted in rank when he came back home after the war was over.

I totally agree with you! I use to like him and thought he would make for a decent presidential candidate but after seeing that footage and him willing to do anything to win the conservative right wingers I have lost all respect for him! He is willing to do anything to have a shot at becoming the next president!

You should watch the actual press conference. He said there was some improvement, but it was still a very dangerous place. The media has spun his remarks out of all recognition.

I've voted Republican several times, he was one I would have voted for.

After his recent slip from reality I'm totally disgusted he's trying to paint Iraq in such a rosie picture.
