Early in the pregnancy you will not be able to tell that your gerbil is pregnant. The babies are still too small to be noticeable. About day 18, you may notice that your gerbil is looking a bit "bulky". If she is currently nursing, however, this slight change may not be noticeable because her body hasn't gotten the chance to return to a pre-pregnancy state.

At about day 20-23, your gerbil will begin to look more pregnant. If you still are questioning whether she is pregnant, you can usual tell by the "hand test". This just involves setting the gerbil on your hand and seeing if her belly brushes your palm. In the normal, non-pregant state, her belly will be lifted slightly off your hand. When she is pregnant, however, you can definately feel the light weight of her stomach touching your palm.

Very late in the pregnancy, day 24-28, your gerbil will feel very large and look pear-shaped. There is no question that she is pregnant at this point! Some people say that the female feels lumpy, like a little sack of potatoes. I've never noticed this, but you may. Whatever you do do not press on her belly to "feel" the babies. This is very uncomfortable for your gerbil and cannot be good for the developing pups. Please don't count your chickens before they've hatched

Gerbils come into heat every four days. If she is in with a male, she is probably pregnant. They mate in the early evening with about two hours of chase-tag-and check their undersides. If she is not nursing a litter she will have the babies 24 days. Gerbils don't usually "show" until a week or a few days before the delivery. If the litter is small (2-3) they may not show much at all. A gerbil about to deliver is fat only in the belly area and can look like she swallowed a ping pong ball. Here is a picture:

A few things to know is that male gerbils are great fathers so keep the male in to raise the babies. Also, they mate during or shortly after the birth, so once you see the litter in the tank, it is likely that your mother gerbil is already pregnant with the next litter (a nursing gerbil usually is pregnant for 5 weeks - the gestation is delayed).

You may be able to feel the babies but the most obvious clue is she'll be much fatter than usual. There isn't much you have to do for a pregnant gerbil other than REMOVE ALL OTHER GERBILS until you know. They can eat or hurt the babies.

you´ll notice when she is about 4-5 days to have them... mine just was a little bigger (the tummy) and she was eating more than usual.. then sudeently i found 7 little gerbils on the nest she built, they look like little beans,,... but then they turn beauty.
the most funny thing is that when they are about 4-5 weeks, theu open just one eye, so they all look like pirates, haha, and then the other eye, that´s weird but funny, you´ll see..

You cannot tell until 4 days or less until born. She will start to look fatter, and fatter, and don't hold her! She can hold her babys as long as she wants, until comfortable!
