Maybe it was a baptist church once upon a time, it's basically a cult now. We have so many cults in my home town (SF) they'd fit right in, although the garbage they spew about gays would get them into some trouble.

It's pretty much one family that follows the word of Fred Phelps, who is a hateful man that does not preach the word of Christ, but rather pervertedly twists the Bible to agree with his bigotry.
When they DID come to my town to protest at the funeral of a soldier who died in Iraq last year, a friend of mine and I went to the funeral to help support the family. There were about 10 people from westboro there (including 3 toddlers) and several hundred vetrans family and supporters that would begin celebrating and praying very loudly every time those bigots tried to say anything.
I've heard of gay bars holding fund raisers where you would donate a few cents for every minute they protested outside. Essentially, the longer the protesters stayed, the more money they made for whatever organization they were supporting (usually a local gay and lesbian organization)

I'm a Fundamental Baptist. I am so tired of people stereotyping me to be like WBC members and people like them.
They already came to my town once. It sparked protests, not in front of WBC, but in front of mine. People just assumed we believed the same thing, even though my church was actively working to send them home. I tried to tell them that maybe they should work at understanding God's word a little better. Basically, they paid me no mind because I'm a girl (some girl offered to give me lessons on how to get a husband because I wouldn't get one being that outspoken).

They're one family of idiots who do not reflect the Baptist doctrine. And "hate the sin love the sinner" is not a load of crap. My sister is a lesbian. I do hate her sin and would do anything to save her from that lifestyle.

They did. They scared the living daylights out of the street kids who are gay. Showing them large posters of the last stages of AIDS, gonorrhea and cancer of the genitals. The children of the WBC were wearing their God Hates F*GS tshirts. If fear and intimidation is the best they can do, I pity them and I stayed as far away from them as I could-when they tried to hand me a pamphlet, I politely said," no thank you, If I touch dirt; I get dirty."

I rather like WBC. They are unabashed in their bigotry. None of this mealy-mouthed "hate the sin, love the sinner" crap. No. WBC say what a lot of evangelical Christians really deep down believe, when you strip away their self-righteous and moralising nonsense. I wish more churches were as honest in their hatred of homosexuals as Pastor Fred and his whacky clan.
