s + 0.082s = 1000
1.082s = 1000
s=1000/1.082 = $924.21
check
924.21 + 0.082 (924.21) = 924.21 + 75.79 = 999.99

The unknown is how much you can spend. (S)

(S)(1.082)=1000
The percent for sales tax is 8.2 percent. If you multiply the amount you spend by 1.082 you don't have to do the second steps of adding back the tax to the original amount.

S=1000/1.082
S=924.21441774491682070240295748614

If you spend anything over that you will go over 1000 once sales tax is added. Since you can't spend more than that number, the answer is $924.21

Let x be the cost of the goods. Then the sales tax would be 8.2% of x. (8.2% = 0.082)

Now the cost of the items plus the tax would be

x + 0.082x = 1000
1.082x = 1000
x = 1000/1.082
x = 924.21

8.2% = 8.2 per cent = 8.2/100 = 0.082

So if A is the price, tax will be 0.082*A
Then,
A + 0.082A = 1000.00
1.082 A = 1000.00
A = 1000.00/1.082 = 924.214...
You won't go over $1000.00 if you expend $924.21 before paying sales tax.

You simply need to back the tax out of the total amount spent by dividing the 1000/1.082 which is 924.23.

Therefore 924.23 would be your retail sales and 75.77 would be your total tax.

To check your work multiple 8.2% by 1000.00 and you should get 75.77.

Hope this helps.

X + .082X = 1000
1.082X = 1000
X = 1000/1.082
X = 924.21441774491682070240295748614

918 is wrong, because 8.2% of 918 + 918 does not equal 1000, i.e., 918 + 8.2% of 1000 = 1000, which is not what you was looking for.

924.21 + 8.2% of 924.21 does equal 1000

Sales tax = 8.2%. Thus the total of your order is 108.2% of what you buy. So now just work backwards. 1000 / 1.082 = $924.21. Thus you can buy $924.21 worth of goods. 8.2% of $924.21 is $75.79. $924.21 + $75.79 = $1000.

8.2% of $918 = $75.28. $918 + $75.28 = $993.28.

x + x * .082 = 1000
1.082x =1000
x=924.214

so $924.21

Why is this the right answer? well we calculated it out we can spend some amount of money (x) but what ever we spend we will have to pay an additional $.082 for every x we spend.
That's how we get the first equation from there its algebra.

the right answer is 924.21
it is like this
let A be the amount without tax and tax rate is T%, then the formula is

A+AX T/100 = net amount including tax

hence A (1+8.2/100) =1000
A (108.2/100) =1000

A = 1000X100/108.2 = 924.21

The answer I believe is $924.21.

I multiplied $924.21 x 1.082 because you said sales tax is 8.2%. I got $999.99.

I think you do 1.082 x n= 999.99
which asks ...

I chose 999.99 because it is below 1000.

Hope this helps a bit!
