I understand the spreading of disease, but prostitutes could get licenses, and have regular inspections and whatnot.

Prostitution, what a great business; you got it, you sell it, and you still got it!!

I don't know, because too many people feel that sex is unethical... which would make selling sex completely out of the question.
They do it in Amsterdam, and there is a county in Nevada where its legal.
It could also lead to to many illegitamite children. Think of all the prostitutes that would sleep with some rich man, and then get pregnant just so they could get child support from him.

It goes back to the old conservitive/religious days. It used to be illigel to have sex out of wedlock and get divoced. I guess it started being open sex after the swinging 20's. It was still fround upon for a long time, still is by some. But you gotta remember they didnt come out with condoms untill 70's 80's. Think about it if you have a baby out of wedlock where you to have a partner "tied down and bound to you" so that they can help raising the child you wont have the problems of a single parent. Really it comes down to women suppression. If you saw/read the da vinci code you'll know how it started. Back in the day, even if your husband cheated and left you with a baby. You would be assumed by many that you cheated and had an illigetimate child so, people would treat you harshly.

What makes you think that prostitution can't be legal? I can be legal, and in fact it is legal in Nevada, except in Las Vegas and on the Strip (in North Las Vegas). They still can hand out advertisements for it on the Strip, though. In fact, it is a better system, since the prostitutes there have to undergo regular examinations and condoms must be used.

Professional Sex practitioners have historically been revered and reviled depending on the time and place. Real people" those with a sense of reality" know that the profession has always been a part of every society. Why these entrepreneurs are excluded from the same protections of every other business person doesn't make any sense.

In Nevada, it is.

But elsewhere, its illegal mostly because of the connotation it carries with it. Prostituting is bad (as most people think), dirty, degrading, etc. No polotician will campaign for it because it makes them seem perverted, and they wouldn't get elected.

It gives the stereotype of adding filth to what could be a squeeky clean suburban life for all

I believe that if well regulated, then prostitution should be legalized in a similar manner to what occurs in Nevada possibly.

It is in certain parts of Nevada. Also in several Europeon Nations. I'm all for the legalization of prostitution as long as it is regulated like in Amsterdam.

It is legal in some counties within the state of Nevada.

Because it is morally unacceptable...But I agree. It is the oldest profession, and regulation would make it "safer".

EDIT - a woman choosing to sell her body is not the same as the "exploitation of women."

Do you think ALL prostitutes would get check-ups and licenses?
