There is no minimum distance, but at least 12"/300mm to the low edge would be sensible.

This does not require Part P certification if fitted on an outside wall back to back with an internal outlet and has an RCD integral or at the source of supply.

Once again to help over come the Part P regulation problem if you live in the UK visit B&Q they do a pre-wired IP rated external socket, feed wire through the wall to your nearest socket then fit the RCD plug supplied in the kit.

Total cost of kit about £20 safe and legal ok for the DIY'er and sanisfies the part P people.

they may even suggest a sensible height to install.

Make sure there is an RCD fitted either to the socket or in the supply to that socket. Also, make sure that it is installed by a qualified electrician. You may need to ensure that "Part P" of the Building Regulations is complied with and the electrical work of course must comply with BS 7671. I don't think there is any mandatory height requirement, but it may depend how tall your dog is!!! ;)

When i put an electric socket outside I went into the wall where the same electric plate was on the inside and tied into that. Since the inside I am supposing was the correct height I used the same for the outside.

The general advice is really good! A factor to consider for the height is:

Are you ever going to put a deck there, if you do will the plug now be under it?

My parents did that one. LOL

if possible have it the same height as the inside ones, usually set at 16 inches above the floor, also remember should be in a waterproof box with cover and should be a gfi ground fault unit for the recepticle, use a 12-2 wire and you will be fine.
