Life imitates art.... heavy metal speaks to the soul of those who listen... if there be any truth, then there is thought on the matter....

Because the world is filled with evil, some have found it.... they think on the things which they have found... and so have dismissed those things which where insignificant to them before.

If there is truth to them, so it is..... sometimes... depressing.... there is darkness for the things that they do do not understand as they do not seek out the good..... the dark things are true....

If you're referring to the recent study conducted at the University of Warwick, it says nothing of the kind (link 1).

That study looked ONLY at the students in the top 5% of academic performers. It found that those who listened to heavy metal reported having lower self-esteem and more difficulties in family relationships than other groups. The students themselves claimed that the music was a form of stress-relief. Even so, only 6% listed it as their favourite genre, and only a third put it even in their top five.

So one thing we can definitely say is that smart people do not predominantly listen to heavy metal. Nor can this kind of study ever show causation, so we can't really say that being smart causes heavy metal listening or heavy metal causes smartness. This is actually a good thing for heavy metal listeners, because otherwise I would tend to believe that heavy metal also caused low self esteem.

I'm reminded, however, of a similar experiment conducted on mice (link 2). Three groups of mice were run through a maze: one heard Mozart continuously in their living area, one no music, and one hard rock. Over time, the no-music mice cut 5 minutes off their times. The Mozart mice did 50% better, cutting their times by 8.5 minutes.

The hard-rock mice ADDED 20 minutes to their times over the same period. In the end the experiment had to be ended because the hard-rock mice all became sedentary and violent and ended up killing each other. None of the other mice did this.

'Nuff said.

Yes it is! Up the Irons!!!

After a mentally challenging day of thinking way too damn much about both critical and non critical topics, it is very helpful to unwind to some loud, angry, music to help vent out all the pent up emotion, thought, and feeling accrued throughout the day.

To help clear up the confusion, there is a vast range of heavy metal out there. While some of it, I agree can be mindless, other musical bands have intricate music with dynamic riffs and meaningful lyrics. Heavy metal fans are not all brainless punks and immature teenagers; as the musical range of metal varies, so does its fan base.

Nothing can make you smarter. Sometimes music can stimulate the brain and get you thinking clearer or quicker for a short time. How smart you are, however, is never going to change for the better.

I dont think so. For a mind to be able to think deeply and absorb more things, one should listen to something smooth and slow.

I thought classical music was "supposed to make babies smarter."

Personally, I don't think there's any correlation.

Maybe it's just a matter of personal preference.
