I think in the end, everything comes down to effective governing. Bulgaria has never fully recovered economically after the fall of communism in 1989, the Parliament structure, a "coalition" of different parties is not working out so well and not much is getting done overall. Half of the government officials are corrupt and steal a lot of money, while the poor elderly Bulgarians look for ways to survive.
Also, one of the greatest problems facing Bulgaria right now, is the decreasing birthrate, which is caused by poverty. Young people are leaving the country and the economy is really just a wreck. It all starts with a better government, one that really cares about its people. Look into the political party "Ataka" as they seem to have some good ideas on what to do but at the same time they are way too radical. Perhaps someone will find the right balance. Good luck on your paper!
