None is "needed" to run, but this is what I look for (only listing experience not delving into character, religon or other traits that make up a person as that is out of scope for the question)
Executive experience 4+ years of Governor or Mayor of City with 500,000 + residents or CEO of large corporation.
Legislative experience - not as important as above but I prefer they have at least served 2 terms as a Representative or one term as a Senator prefer Federal level.
Prefer candidates that do not have a long family history in politics they tend to be spoiled, elitist, and not very good (and YES present company included!).
Military background - not a deal breaker but definately preferred since they will be Commander in Chief.
Not looking for former cabinet position holders to be President but take that experience into account as to help define the experience as a whole.
Without the executive experience I am not likely to support the candidate

Let's see what our current pres has:
-Dodge a draft by entering the National Guard and then not even show up for that.
-Be a past and probably current cokehead
-Spend your college years as a drunken fratboy
-Run two businesses (both started by your father for you) into the ground.
-Trade a great baseball player (Sammy Sosa) right when he is entering the prime of his career.
Oh and these two small things:
1. LOTS of $$$$$
2. A daddy who was ambassador to China, the head of the CIA vice-president (twice), and then president.

Honesty, Integrity, moral fortitude, a stable background and a unshakable spirit and love for this country and what it stands for. They need to be in touch with the majority and shouldn't forget the minority. They should have a plan on where they would like us to be in the future. They should be an example for the people of this country and they must be respected around the rest of the world. And if you vote for me, I promise to deliver on all those levels.

As long as you're over 35 and a U.S. citizen born on U.S. soil, you can be president. We've even had a president who wasn't registered to vote! He was so apolitical that he refused the letter telling him he had been nominated for president, because it came with postage due!

GEORGE BUSH does not care about us..HIS people as a whole. he doesnt care about what WE want nor about the innocent poeple dying in this war, Amercian and Iraqi alike!

First they should have experienced the thought process using something besides neocon rhetoric. That puts them way ahead in my book.
