Having body fat doesn't translate to having no athletic ability. If you look around Major League Baseball there are many players who could be looked upon as being "fat", but to suggest that just baseball shouldn't be a sport because of the involvement of overweight players is ridiculous. That would also mean that Football is not a sport either then, right??? In baseball, take David Ortiz of the Boston Red Sox for example. I wouldn't say he is "fat", but you don't have to look too hard to see the gut. But his production at the plate is something that only a current handful of people on the face of the earth could match or exceed. You could probably count them on 2 hands. Baseball, for the athletic ability it takes to play at the highest level, is most certainly a sport. The word "sport" is thrown around and slapped on way too many "activities" these days. The questioning of the validity of a "sport" should be more focused toward things like bowling or stock car driving.

The only people that are even close to being "fat" on a baseball field is the occasional pitcher and some of the managers. There are 750 major league ball players and I would say that less than 2% of them are fat and they play a position that doesn't require them to move really fast. Yes players get tired at the end of the game and the season is 162 games long so it is exhausting as a sport.

Why do they show hot-dog eating highlights on the sports channel?
Baseball on the whole isn't as physically demanding, say, hockey or football. But it is a competitive past-time requiring some physical exertion, and that's all I really require to label something a sport. It's neither fair nor accurate to say something is not a sport simply because the required skill set doesn't fall perfectly inside the realm of 'athleticism'.

Some guys in baseball are fat because baseball is not really an aerobic sport. So they do what they need to do, sprint from place to place, and that doesn't really keep your heart rate up for very long, which is required to lose weight.

Several years ago, a woman complained to John Kruk about how out of shape baseball players are. He told her, "lady, we're not athletes, we're baseball players"?
It goes back some decades where most baseball players were fat. Babe Ruth and Jimmy Foxx come immediately to mind. Those players were hard eating, hard drinking guys that played most games with hangovers.

Unlike, say, football, where all the players are svelte.
Who's fat? There are a few guys that are a bit pudgy, sure, but nobody I'd call fat.

I heard a story once about when John Kruk was still playing. John Kruk loved to say, "I'm not an athlete, I'm a baseball player."
That is how he justified his body size.

Have you ever watched NLF? Some of those tacklers and blockers are huge! And baesball players sprint in a game, and like someone said before, that's not what helps you lose weight. You have no idea.

Fat people still have the skill. Like Babe Ruth. He was the homerun king until Aaron came along. So fat people are good

Obesity is genetic, as well as simply 'gained.' There are many ppl who work out extensively and can't shed a pound. David Wells may be overweight but he probably works out more than your typical American.
