Historically Bill Russell has been given a lot of props for defense and shot blocking ability
unfortunatly defensive stats weren't kept back then so this generation has no idea how many blocked shots he actually got, per game or otherwise.
Some have even claimed as high as 10 a game, which seems crazy but as someone who's never seen more than a few ancient clips I can't really say.
As for the more modern era and since defensive player of the years and all that I have got to give it up to Dikembe Mutombo. He dominated the defensive player award getting numbers like 14 rebounds a game and 4 blocks a game. His presence and defense on Shawn Kemp was the reason the 8th seeded nuggets beat the top seeded Sonics in the 1994 playoffs.
Mt. Mutombo blocked and altered multiple shots and is still a defensive presence today well into his 40's. I have to give it up to the man who was born Dikembe Mutombo Mpolondo Mukamba Jean-Jacques Wamutombo

Bill Russell. He was such an amazing force in the paint. Some people that watched him play claim that he used to get from 8-10 steals and blocks per game. The reason why we don't have those stats is cuz' by that time the NBA didn't count those statistics. He was a good offensive player, but his defense was what made him great and lead the Boston Celtics to win 11 titles.

Bill Russell. He anchored the Celtic dominance and dominated Wilt Chamberlin each and every time they met. He revolutionized the way defense is played in the post. An extremely intelligent man who shut down the lane and was the 1st to use blocked shots as fast break outlets. Nowadays blocks are for show. He would block shots to his teammates. Defense wins Championships and there's a reason the Celtics won 8 Championships in a row back in the day....

since the question asked about the nba history, then i'm going with bill russell.....i wasn't able to watch bill russel play since i am very young....but since i love reading and watching nba very much, i hear and read about him pretty much.....and when people talks about him as a basketball player, the word defense is never missing in the sentence.....i've watched some of his highlights and i saw him blocking lots of shots and running the fastbreaks that came from his steal and i knew, he is a very great defensive player....plus winning 11 championships just proves my theory right....russell's defense is definitely a big reason to the celtics' success by that time....
but if it is the the best active defensive player in the nba, then i'll go with ben wallace.....his defensive player of the year awards are the evidence.....he's definitely the defensive player of the decade.....

I hate comparing players outside of their era, but I'd have to say, for his time, Bill Russell. Without Bill manning the post, the Celtics don't win all those championships. Also, people forget that, though Wilt Chamberlain was 7-2 240lbs, Russell was only 6-9 215lbs.

Bill Russell won 5 MVPs. Let's just say it wasn't for his offense.
