I am getting a 5 gallon hex tank from Wal Mart tomorrow and I need to know, is a dwarf gourami, honey gourami, 2 sunset coral dwarf platies, and 3 fancy guppies compatible? I think the dwarf gourami isn't. If it isn't, what else can I put in the 5 gallon hex tank? Any other advice would be greatly appreciated! Please help! <:-)

Welcome to the hobby!!

That's a bit too much for a 5 gallon. I would suggest you start off with only the 2 sunset platys for the first few weeks while your tank cycles, then add the guppies or one of the gourami. A few weeks after that you could add the second gourami if you didn't get the guppies. That would be about the limit for a 5 gallon.

Go slow and take your time. Rushing things will only lead to dead fish. Before you get your tanktomorrow, read this link and the few pages that follow it.

Be sure to read the Getting Started , Cycling Your Tank , Cleaning the Tank , Interesting fish , What About Painted Fish? , Tank Population and Equipment List pages too. You and your fish will be so glad you did!

First, I hate WALMART cause there fish are dead, sick, or zombies. Second, gouramis will kill the fancy guppies and platies cause they are small and less aggressive than other fish. A five gallon tank can mostly hold 7 inches of fish ( not the regular 5 inches). Third, the guppies and the platies like alkaline water that is not good for other fish. NOT saying the gouramis will die, but they wont give so much life. I will get either full gouramis or full live bearers, like guppies or platies. You could give a shot with what you have. NOTHING IS IMPOSSIBLE.

keep in mind that you should limit yourself to 1 in of fish per gallon i think you'd need a bigger tank/ personally i wouldn't go below a 20 gallon because the smaller ones can be more difficult to maintain the proper water conditions. the gourami will grow to about 4-6 inches alone, they tend to be slightly aggressive but mainly towards themselves. they are best kept in odd numbers of 3 or more but i think you would need a lrger tank to support them as they get bigger. while they are small they may not bother the other fish too much but it will be a problem when the get larger cause the guppies will only get to be just over an inch. also give a week for your tank to cycle through before you add any fish or the ammonia levels will kill them.

a 5.5 gallont tank is too small for the two dwarf gouramis alone. Gouramis are territorial, if you have more than one male, there should be enough space for the other male to go to if chased off... Minimum 20 gallon tanks with plants (bigger would be better). Cory cats do better with at least three individual (they usualy stay in groups). So the quick answer is no.

Get a 55gallon and your all set. To keep the tank get a triops kit and follow the instructions.
