Everyday the news looks worse as enemies like Chavez build power in South America. Iran will be a nuclear superpower within the next few years. North Korea is still a threat. Our environment is being systematically destroyed to the point where we are effecting our climate as well. Within our own country there is such hatred and selfishness all around us. How do we fix this or can we? All those people who think we are living in the end times, may actually be right this time if we don't do something to fix this mess.

What mess - sounds like a lot of foreign kooks and misinformation - the air and water are cleaner than they've ever been, dearie.

Actually, your question is incorrectly stated. None of the things you list are only focused on the USA.

Chavez, North Korea, Our environment, Hatred and Selfishness. They effect many countries.

The real question is can our current mix of civilisations exist in harmony? Now that would be worthy of a good debate.

"We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal"

The real good ideas last for ever.

Even though Americans have all memorised this from our days in school and it is one of the foundations of the US society, we violate it on a daily basis. The whole world does.

We have the answer, the question is do we have the desire and courage to act on that answer...... ? To challange blind faith and use the grey matter God gave us? To strive to make each interaction one between equals and not look down on those with different views?

The evidence in this post alone tells me we shall not achieve this.

So I say the answer to both your question and mine is NO. But that shall not deter me from trying!! I pray that you all will similarly persevere.

Politicians usually have problems looking into the future- and how the SanFran Bay will be triple the size within the century, how Florida will be like Key West (if that isn't underwater by then,) and how New Orleans will be the next Atlantis- sans the gleaming underwater paradise, replaced with drunken people and Mardi Gras.

Al Gore did win the 2000 election (the popular vote.)

There have always been hatred, madmen and dangers in the world, but now that we have greater technology, unfortunately we can find out more about it, and the madmen and dangers can have a wider reach. We can't let the genie out of the bottle, but if we work together, we might be able to convince the crazies that there are better alternatives, and find technologies that help the environment, or at least keep us from destroying it.

I'm sure this will get me a whole lots of thumbs down, but ...
try reading Barack Obama's book 'The Audacity of Hope'.

I think he brings a very positive message about the future and what good government can do to bring positive changes. He is obviously extremely bright and writes clearly about many complex issues in a style that is quite accessible.

I found it quite inspiring. I think it will give you reasons to hope for the future of the US and of the future position of the US in the world.

No. As you can see by the responses so far, Americans are too busy fighting amongst themselves to come to any kind of consensus on making things better. Fools.

Oh well... throughout history, every great empire has fallen.

I dunno, can Venezuela, New Zealand, Nepal, Mongolia, Gabon, Switzerland, or anyone else? Things aren't nearly as bleak as the press might have you believe. They load their articles with tons of sensationalism, and a few grains of truth and fact to make everything sound like it must be a headline.

But, on the flipside of my statement, is this: So long as we strive to be good to one another, and to try to fix problems, rather than ascribe blame (that takes a long time, which is a waste of time), we might actually improve things.

Shhhh, Bush plugs his ears when someone says these things.

He's so out of touch with reality, he wouldn't know the truth if it came up and bit him where the sun doesn't shine and his head came off in the process!

Just save us from Bush's antics, the rest we'll take care of ourselves.
