makes some people so... flat?

Well, honestly i dont think that there are any flat people in the world, i think that there are those who just seem that way, and that its just a front so as to hide their deeper emotions...and im sure each one of those individuals as their own reasons for not wanting to show their real feelings or passions too openly, so i can respect that.

Eyes that turn from wonder... ears that hear complaints - not the music in the voices... lips that are too fearful of singing out... smell that is rife with the perception of odors, not aromas... and... touch... too afraid of being turned away, so they turn from life first.
Any of those things could wound a soul, make it flat...

They are numb to the joys of life because they have experienced so many of the pains. Pains are made so that we might appreciate the joys. Most people don't seem to realize that even through the pain, we should still be thankful for the joy...because it is always there...
