could it be that ur only using a half a tank? it holds 4.5 gallons. u got very long legs on that bike. it will tell u when u need gas. if injected, u'll get a low fuel warning light...if carburated, the main tank will run dry and the bike will shut down....just flip the petcock to reserve and u'll have enough to get to a gas station.

I've known beginning riders who have started on large bikes like yours. They did okay and are still alive but I don't recommend starting there. In a perfect world you would start riding dirt bikes first or at least a dual sport because they are light easy to handle and forgiving when you mess up and you can gradually move up to a larger bike in time as your ability and knowledge improves. But if you are dead set on the 1100 at least take a riders safety course first and if you have buddies with smaller bikes, preferably something like a 500 or 650 or smaller, see if they will give you a lesson in a large parking lot or better yet an open field to get an idea what it's like. (I'm assuming you've never been on a bike) Good Luck and Be Careful, WEAR A HELMET BOOTS GLOVES

Because you have a ( nominally ) 3 gallon tank, but you have about 1/2 gallon in your reserve. That's a warning signal so you don't end up pushing the bike to the gas station. When you ride, you normally put the fuel valve in the "normal" or "on" position. If the bike starts to run out of fuel, turn the valve to the "reserve" position and you should have enough fuel to get to the nearest gas station. Most bikes, it's about 20 miles or so.

The fuel tank capacity on that bike is 4.2 gallons,
including a .6 gallon reserve.
Ride it until it runs out of gas, then switch to reserve and fill it up.
To make sure the gas station isn't ripping you off, fill it up a couple of times at different stations and brands (Mobil, Shell, Bp, etc).

Did you run it all the way empty before filling it?
In some motorcycles, there's additional fuel storage in other places. I don't know if your Shadow is like that.
It could be worse. My gas tank holds about 2.2 gallons, but sometimes when I fill it, the pump says 2.4 -- I suspect the gas station owner is cheating. Not going to that gas station again.

Because the Honda Shadow Sabre 1100 Sucks. You should have purchased a CBR1000RR, CBR660F4i if you wanted a Honda product. If you want cruiser you it should have been Harley Softail Deuce. Save yourself the public humiliation and sell it.
