on ebay when a buyer buys something and pays for the shipping, is that supposed to cover how much it costs for the seller to ship the item to them? and does it?

yes...sometimes the seller actually charges a bit more to cover the packing materials (bubble wrap, box, tape, whatever) they might have to buy, or is just estimating the shipping costs, which could actually be lower or higher than what is quoted to u...plus there`s usually the option of buying insurance, delivery confirmation, etc...

Hi – I am an established seller on eBay. eBay has been my full time job for 4 years, and I have sold over 12,000 items.

The shipping and handling fee usually covers all the aspects of shipping:

!)shipping packaging
2)labels and ink
3) the postage charged by the carrier (USPS, Fed Ex, etc)
4) wages paid to the employees working in the shipping department

Many larger sellers like us have employees that must be paid, according to The Fair Labor Standards Act. Remember, a seller is using his/her time to package and ship the item, perhaps drive to the post office, etc.

If you purchase an item from an internet retailer or a catalog, the shipping charged to you is usually more than the actual postage on the package.

Please email me directly if I can help you further.

Regards-

It is suppossed to cover the shipping costs however I have noticed that people charge a little extra on shipping to make some extra money. I started selling on ebay and had a really hard time figuring out shipping prices. Sometimes what I had charged for shipping didn't cover the shipping.

yes and yes. If the shipping is free, that mean's the seller is paying for shipping.

it covers the cost of postage and packaging. if you check the prices of everything before you list something then yes it does, some overcharge but it puts off buyers if postage is too high.
