Because they lack an understanding of D&D. It's the same as parents letting their kids drink only Mt. Dew because Coke has too much caffine... doesn't make much sense, but there are those who believe it.

They don't see it as a parallel.
D & D has a bad rap for a few reasons, but there are two main ones:
The first is the movie "Mazes and Monsters"; this really happened, though the movie is a bit more dramatic than the actual events.
The second is the idea that D&D has it's own pantheon. This promotes the heathen concept of paganism. You kill things, and this is also very anti-christian.
There are a few concepts here and there, in addition to these, that anti-D&D fanatics use and it's sad that people are still this way today. I've seen anti-D&D sites as recently as 6 months ago.
Blessings and it's wonderful that you support both the online AND the 'old school' gaming and role playing hobbies!

D & D had active campaigns, leaflets and comic books given to churches, and sermons preached against it in the '80's and '90s, so I think it is more a matter of name recognition rather than content. They probably never heard of Runescape. But they heard all about that evil dragons and dungeons!
D & D exposes you to a lot of mythology and theory of magic, but I don't think there is anything harmful to your soul in it. I could see it sparking someone's interest enough that they'd research demonology or magic from other sources though. I used to play, and if I found a good game I'd still play--I find nothing wrong with it--it's only a game, if you leave it all in the imagination and don't try to make it reality.

Dungeons and Dragons was blamed for some disappearances and suicides in the late 70s of troubled teens and college students.
People being who they are believed it.
Runescape is a video game and parents can keep an eye on that better(maybe).
check this site for a better idea about what happened

because of How D n D got started as a more physical game and as far as runescape there parents either dont know about it because there not watching them to know or not aware what runescape is, alot of parents are oblivious to stuff there children do on the computer as it is.
