I call in today at Wal-mart (I work there part-time just through college) I have been working for well over a month. Today is obv. Good Friday and there is no way I can get a doctors note. My doctors office is closed until Monday. I have not called-in before and I am sick. I am showing sign of an upper respiratory infection and I have a 101 F fever. When I called to tell the store I wasn't going to be there somebody...I don't know who he was got a big attitude with me and told me I better bring a doctors note. The information that I am looking at right now says nothing about a doctors note and that I can't be disciplined until I have 4 absences. I took all the right steps to call in. I call the 1800 # and notified the store. Then they'll just talk to me about what is going on...What should I do if they try to start something with me tomorrow when I come back to work?.

I am laying in bed with me lap top...My boyfriend is studying so I can't watch t.v. and I am taking some penicillin that I had from a surgery not too long ago..(.I got a refill on it.) The info I am looking at is in their employee hand book. I talk to my dad ( he used to be walmart mgmt and is best friends w/ my store mgr) He said they were probably busy and just wanted me to come in if I could. He said if he had to he would call the home office.

If you are sick, you are sick. As you said, you did the right thing by following procedures. They cannot discipline you for that.

Can't you go to an emergency clinic or local hospital emergency room to get treatment and get a note? With a 101 fever today you may not be able to make it in tomorrow either, and a respiratory infection is very contagious unless treated.

Being absent on a holiday often sets up a 'red flag' for employers, and many do require a doctor's note for absences. I don't know what information you are looking at, but I suggest you check the official company manual or H.R. department to find what is required.

Do they have an employee handbook? Most companies require a note after calling off 3 days in a row. I have never heard of that. Sounds to me like someone was trying to bully you. Stand your ground. Just let them know you didn't feel well. If you feel better tomorrow, go in and act like nothing happened. If they talk to you about it just say, I don't run to the doctor every single time I don't feel well. My daughters school tried to pull that crap and I told them to pound sand. That is ridiculous. Walmart has a really bad reputation for crap like that. Don't let them push you around. If tomorrow you really still don't feel well I would go to an urgent care center and they will give you a note.

Does your college have a clinic for students? If you are really sick, you need to go to an urgent care facility anyway. God forbid you progress to pneumonia. This will cover you in case the doctor says you need to rest tomorrow as well. Just remember to ask for a note and to include the dates that you'll need to stay home to recover. Generally, you need to be on antibiotics for a day before returning to work. Doing this responsibly will only prove how stupid and arrogant the jerks at work are.

Take care,
Mon :-)

Most companies allow you to self certify your ilness for the for the first 5 days of absence before they require a sick line. Its obviously not possible for you to get to a doctor over the weekend so I would say they are being unfair.

As long as you've followed company policy then they can't touch you. Maybe the guy you spoke to was having a bad day.

Go back when you feel well and if need be get a line when you can.

If you are sick..you're sick...If they discipline you.. ask them is that what the policy is? You could have read it wrong..They maybe upset because it is a holiday and they doubt you are sick. They don't know your work ethic yet as you have not been there that long. You don't seem too sick to get on the computer to get advice. If you are fired you may need to see a lawyer.. usually the first consult is free.

If you show up tomorrow, Saturday, obviously you wern't attempting to take a long Easter holiday. This often happens.

Most likely it will blow over. I've seen many supers take their power too seriously. Lots.
Show up tomorrow, even if you're in bad shape. They won't want you there.
