For chemistry purposes, the principle orbitals have 2,8,8,18,18,32,32, etc Just read the rows of the periodic table (including Lanthanides and Actinides in their proper row). The sub-orbitals (angular momentum) have 2(s),6(p),10(d),14(f),etc. So n=1 has just an s (2). n=2 has an s and a p (2+6=8). n=3 has an s and a p (2+6=8). It has a d, too, but the 3d doesn't fill until the fourth row, so it gets counted there.
