We had a skunk that began to burrow a nest for itself right beside my house in my garden. My dad went out there to scare it off but it refused to move. It literally just layed there while my dad threw clumps of dirt around it, proded it with a 2x4, and made loud noises. I read that they usually go through a series of defenses before spraying but this one didn't spit, hiss, puff its fur or anything. It wasn't cornered at all, it had plenty of room to run away. It just didn't. Any thoughts?

It did not have babies but maybe it was pregant? Unfortunately my dad felt it was necessary to kill it to protect our dogs from getting sprayed (they were most intrigued by the skunk and were fraternizing with it before we discovered it).

It was either too used to humans, or had a nest with babies, or it might have been rabid. Rabid animals are very friendly and mellow most of the time, because they are delusional. Check and make sure your dogs don't have any new bite marks on them.

Skunks are cocky little things... They think they're tough because things generally run away from it if they spray. Your best bet is to call animal control and try and trap the thing and then exterminate it.

Probably too used to humans, therefore no longer scared of them.

Be careful! Wild animals that show no fear sometimes have rabies.
