Are some stars determined to be former planets that ignited into a star and became gaseous energy or a star?

I don't know what clue or theory led me to think about this but I felt it may have been described by mathematics and the table of elements somewhere. As in, a planet has the potential to do this. What do you know about this or can reference me towards?
