China's economic advantage is cheaper labor, so wheat is cheaper to produce over there, even when you factor in the shipping costs.

Similarly, the U.S. farmers are required, by federal law, to destroy part of their crop to keep our foods more expensive, partially as part of a WTO regulation agreement (so, pop quiz: who, for all intent and purposes, truly owns the farmer's land and products?)

For similar reasons, Saudi Arabia buys sand from Great Britain to filter their swimming pools. Great Britain's sand has the right properties naturally, but the sand of the Arabian desert has larger particles, and would thus need to be crushed every time they replaced their filters, which is more expensive than the shipping costs.

It is not a matter of quality. It's just a matter of cost.

In a word, economics.

Do we -=need=- China for wheat? Not in the least. There are graineries upon graineries of wheat sitting idle in Canada and the US. However, for these manufacturers to buy that wheat will cost them more than buying from China even including the shipping!!

Same concept as why are most of our electronics made in Taiwan or Korea or Japan. It isn't because they can't be made domestically. It is simply economics.

Very sad state of affairs all around.

With a sigh,

Our farmers grow plenty wheat. It's just that some corporations are willing to risk our lives, and the lives of our pets by buying cheaper foriegn grain. If you want safe products buy American.

We don't need them for wheat gluten. This is part of the Wal-Marting of America, where it seems like every business wants to make & sell things cheaper, but no one asks enough questions abou thow quality suffers.

We really shouldn't be feeding our pet's such cr@ppy food. Wheat gluten is very very hard for pets especially dogs to digest. Screw China - Buy American.
