Six months is quite early for chocolate, especially if he hasn't had any other solid foods.
If he has already started having a variety of foods, then one tiny piece is not going to do him any harm. As long as you don't give him chocolate frequently, he will not be able to develop a taste for it.
With my son, I was quite against giving him sweet foods/chocolate, I think he had some at about a year old. With my daughter though, my son decided she wanted chocolate ice cream at about 4 months.
It is entirely up to you both to come to some sort of compromise. Could you let him have one or two buttons tomorrow or on easter sunday, but then not again until Christmas/special occasion?

why do they feel the need to gave the little boy chocolate? Have they not considered that a baby of this age could choke v. easily on choc. buttons? My little boy, age 3, is only really starting to eat some crisps now. For the last six months he has been getting wotsits or quavers but only on occasion.
I am sure two or three would be ok (under supervision and if the button was fairly soft/melty already before eating), but babies of this age should really only be sampling purees, etc.

Hehe, we had a similar debate a few years back. Compromise - let your son have a tiny, tiny bit of the chocolate and a tiny bit of the inside. These things are pure sugar, and that much sugar in a boy that young is extremely unhealthy. But a little, tiny bit won't be so bad, and then your partner gets the satisfaction of letting him try it. Make sure you give him some water afterward to keep his mouth clean.

Wait until a year. There are certain foods that an infant's digestive tract is not yet ready for, such as honey, peanuts and such.
Don't pollute him with chocolates...adding sugars like that is plain cruel, especially with all of the partially hydrogenated oils in it.

He should not have a whole piece of candy. At that age my son had a small piece of chocolate held up to his mouth and he licked at it, but he was not given the whole piece. He is now 2 1/2 and while he does like chocolate, he would rather have fresh fruit for a snack. A baby this young should NEVER be given a piece of chocolate in their mouth because it can be a choking hazard.

Please take a look at this web page...
http://www.dietitian.com/infants.html
there are questions and answers on here that refer to the consumption of chocolate by infants and the effects...
You are correct in wishing to keep it away from your child...
and this should help you with some ammunition to make an argument to your partner as to exactly WHY it isn't a good idea.
Good luck.
Good health.

My sister in law was like this and I had to get really cross before she realised I was serious. She said I was stupid and a little wouldn`d hurt. I won and my two didn`t have chocolate until they were much older. Her own two were fed it from birth.
I think you should stick to your principles.

Don't give a 6 month old Chocolate, are you crazy???!!!
Give it some fruit instead and then it can get used to the sweetness of fruit instead of the sugar laden chocolate.
