Because kids are going through lots of changes in their lives and they have to know how to help them out. And, they have to know how to deal with problems involving their kids in the classroom. Also, kids learn to have a lot of trust towards their teachers so they go to the teachers for help when a problem arises.

Long ago teachers didn't need to know why.. they got out the stick and took care of it. It worked with some and many got abused..many dropped out and worked on the farm etc.
Now we want to keep kids in school longer, can't hit the kids and they kids are unruly SO the only way left is to negotiate a win-win situation with the kids. Some don't and just bully but others use psychology to figure out what will work. They try to get the kids to "buy-in" to the subject.
My son's a math-nerd, literally, and he hated everything that wasn't math. One of his Economic teachers figured this out early and told him econ. was the "most math oriented" social science. That "hooked" him and he did very well because of that teacher's use of psychology!

As a teacher myself, i can say that psychology is necessary in order to understand the students....both 'normal' psychology and educational psychology. The former will assist in dealing with the students in an effecive manner, and the latter will help in the teacher's pedagogy, classroom management, motavation, and similar areas.Psychology also assists in the area of relating effectivly with other teachers, principal, and parents.

Psychology is a subject that I believe everyone should take - if nothing else, than to gain an understanding into human nature. As a teacher, I have found that my classes in psychology have helped me to understand the 'psyche' of my students, as well as my co-workers, principal and everyone I work with. It has also helped me to understand myself. Today's youth are riddled with so much more pain than I ever knew as a child their age. I have at least 30 percent of my students who are on some kind of medication for various reasons. Some have issues with reading, and are not 'resource' students, but I have to be able to help them regardless. Without having some classes /workshops to help me deal with these situations and how I need to position myself, I don't know how I would be able to teach. Today's schools are so full of misguided, defiant, disrespectful, disorderly and some violent youth, I don't know how we are able to teach. Just yesterday, I learned that a female teacher was assaulted in a school that was specifically designed to help 'alternative students'. Four young people jumped on her, beat and stomped her. When the police was called and came to the scene - these same students attempted to jump them. Now you tell me - where do students get off - jumping the police - are they not fearful of anyone??? So, psychology helps us to help not only ourselves, but the students we try to teach.

Because teaching is primarily a psychology subject. As a teacher you are dealing with the learning process in humans and that is studied by psychologists.

Because your main focus is on the brain - which is whay psychology is about.
If you don't understand development of children, you will not be successful in having them succeed.
Besides, you do an awful lot of counselling with students and their problems and fee ideas on psychology do hurt in that area.
