My bf thinks I'm crazy for wanting to become a licensed cosmetologist after having earned a Bachelor's degree from a "big deal" university. Blah! I have a job, and I'm self-sufficient but I'd like to do make-up as a second career or "side hustle" as one magazine calls it. What's wrong with a "brainiac" having a fun side job? Oh, and he wants to be a comedic actor! Is he being selfish or should I really stick to a "real" career?

Did I not just mention I already have a job? I don't "need" to earn money doing make up, I'm just interested in doing it on the side.

There is nothing wrong with it. I too have a bachelor's degree from a big deal university, however; I'm currently taking cosmetology classes. It' s a lot of fun, and there is a tone of money to be made! There is nothing wrong with expanding your horizons and learning new skills.
As for thinking that cosmetology isn't a real career, that's totally wrong. Do you know how much professional cosmetologists make? He's definitely being selfish. If you wanted to play low ball you could always tell him that he should get a real career instead of focusing on being a comedic actor!
Good Luck!

Absolutely nothing is wrong. You already have your bachelors, and that is what is really important. If you want to have a side job, then do it. It seems like it would be more like a hobby, and you should always develop your interests. Unless you want to put in your two years for a masters degree, then that would be really great too. Personally, I think that you should just do what you think would make you happier. You already have your "real job", so what's the harm in having something that you think is fun? I say, go for it.

If you have the time and money to invest in this as a side career, there's nothing wrong with it. It's a good job which is needed in our society and helps women. If it's something you enjoy, even better. Everyone should have a job they look forward to doing! Good luck.

Nothing is wrong with it at least go to school for it if you have the time/money and it would be fun to know what your doing with hair/makeup/nails that way you can always do your friends hair ect. Or do cosmetic stuff on the weekends like a freelancer. Its all good =)

cosmetics is a real career. Just because you have fun does make it any less of a career. If you love what you do you will not have to dread going to work everyday.

Girl, ignore him and get your degree in Cosmetology. Don't let anyone's erradic beliefs get in the way of your dream. I know someone who went to school for fashion design and got her degree, but afterwards got her certificate in cosmetology because she loved doing hair and fashion just wasn't cuttin it.

If u make it a career, get ready for mediocre pay and weekend work, something usually reserved for non-graduates. Do it on the side to explore your creativity

Go for it. If he's more into being a snob than making the most out of life, who needs him around boring everyone.

do whatever you want. my friend is studying cosmetology and it's fun. and you have brains too, so you have something to talk about to your clients. it's a real job and it's not easy, but it's fun too. do what you like to do, as long as you have fun doing it too.
