I hired my college friend, as my personal assistant, believing that he had potentials for. Btw,I am freelance webdesigner. i know few of programming languages and do web designs. That time i hired him, i was disappointed that forgot all what he has learned from college like even simple HTML, graphics editing in photoshop and a lot more. And all what i wanted him to do are so wrong. I trained him but nothing came to his mind. Now that Im regreting that I hired him. What should I do with him?I shouldve screened him. Is it high enough that his monthly salary is 200$? Another problem is that, he is my friend when we were in college... Im sure personal things will get involved..Should i fire him, what should i say or do to fire him which he would hurt that much?Im afraid that he would get mad at me. Please help!

Be honest with him and don't bring any subjectivity into the situation, keep everything factual and objective.

We've made the mistake of hiring friends for our business. So far, the people that were friends are no longer employed by us and are no longer friends with us.

How long has he been working for you? If it's just a few days, give him a pep talk and let him understand clearly what you expect from him. If it's been a while, I say let him go. If he hasn't learned the job by now, he should be fired. He would be if he were working for a company, so don't let your friendship bring your business down. Also, let this be a lesson. Never hire friends and family!
One more thing, did you say you're paying him $200 a month?! What are his hours? That seems kinda low as some part time jobs offer at least 200/week.... Maybe that's why he's screwing up. So you *can* fire him....

Tell him that you are sorry but you need to hire an assistant with more/better web skills, and you will keep him in mind for any future positions if they should come up.

this situation is not going to get better, and it is best to deal with it as early as you can, before things get worse.

Same thing happened to me - I made my best friend a partner in my business and he was a disaster. He kept screwing things up and making us look bad. so I just kept bringing his mistakes to his attention, not mad, or putting him down, just saying, well we have to re-do this project cause it didn't work as it was ... and his shame eventually took him away himself. If that doesn't work, you will just have to tell him - look, you're my friend, but I can't use the work you do - so fix it or quit it - up to you -
