You could have a go at a couple of sites.

The first one is:

If you type the name of a band that you like, it will generatenames of other artists that you might like. the closer they are to each other, the more similar they are. You canclick on any name to expand a bit.

The other one is:
http://www.pandora.com
You request an artist or a song and it plays something similar (it can't play exactly what you request for copyright reasons, but it will be similar). then it keeps playing things that it thinks you might like. You can define the music it chooses by giving it the thumbs up or down.
