Why do most radio/ tv station call letters begin with a "K" west of the Mississippi and with a "W" east of it?

it's an international thing that helps identify where certain
transmissions are coming from by relegating certain letter
prefixes to certain countries/areas/activities (i.e. K and W
have the assignment you noted -- Russia uses "U" and "R",
Canada uses "C" etc.)
