The first sentences of Chapter Three are one example:

"A town is a thing like a colonial animal. A town has a nervous system and a head and shoulders and feet. A town is a thing seperate from all toher towns, so that there are no two towns alike. And a town has a whole emotion."

Same page, second papagraph:

"the nerves of the town were pulsing and vibrating with the news...The news swept on past the brush houses, and it washed in a foaming wave into the town of stone and plaster."

Well the Pearl is by John Steinbeck but I am not sure if that is the right book because it says by Hemingway.

I think you read the wrong book. The Pearl is by Steinbeck (and sorry, I haven't read it). Just to clarify.
