Although the pet community does have a point that millions of pets are killed and are crowding up the local animal shelters, but personally, I believe that spaying/neutering is a bit extreme. Just because I'm the pet owner doesn't give me the right to steal away a female pet's uterus? It's not min I don't think it's moral or fair. That doesn't mean that I support breeding, because I don't. Whoever does that is selfish. But that doesn't I know she doesn't have a human mind, but that doesn't mean she doesn't have a mind. You just can't understand it because it's not human. That's her decision to make, not yours. And then you force her to have to take care of her puppies. And when she squashes them, you get mad? If she wants to have kids, they'll have to be taken to the shelter unfortunately. B/c I can't afford to keep them. But like I said earlier, is there any alternative to spaying/neutering? Like surgically tightening or tying the uterus? Making it difficult to have kids but possible

Do you own pets because if you do then that animal came from a breeder, unless you have a wild animal. If you do you are already supporting breeders whether you like it or not(without breeders there are no pets). I'm against the whole spay or neuter thing. Theres nothing humane about it, I mean if thats humane then why can't parents have their children neutered? I mean the human population is alot worse than the pet population. Thats why China has the one child policy. Why not because that would be considered cruel. After a woman has had a few children she can have her tubes tied and a man can have a vasectomy, but thats their own choice. Rapists are sometimes required to have chemical castration, but that is a punishment(are we punishing our animals for doing what is in their nature to do). So then why is it considered ok to put an animal through a surgery that in the wild it would never need or get, because we are selfish and think of whats good for us over whats actually good for the animal. Theres nothing more pathetic then seeing a neutered dog try and have sex with another dog. This does happen because my dog tried. I for one believe they know they've been through surgery because I got my dog from a shelter and before he was a healthy and happy dog, but after the required surgery he got very sick and very mean. I could go on and on forever about why it is a bad thing, but I won't. I think that if someone really cared about animals they could make a birth control pill for animals. Which solves the problem of pet owners not wanting their animal to get pregnant, takes away an uneccesary surgery, and if the pet owner wanted their pet to have babies then the animal still could. I'm sure if animals could talk they'd have alot more negitive things to say about spaying and neutering then I do.

There's a great article (rather long) which lists all of the long-term effects of spaying or neutering, of which there are far more negative than positive (link attached). It includes all of the information never talked about while the great push is going on to have ALL pets undergo surgery, even those in all same-sex households or those given no opportunity to reproduce. Many pet owners are beginning to wonder how such invasive surgery, which is done for no medically necessary reason, could possibly be good for their pet's health, which it isn't, and if there are any alternative. The article talks about some alternative too. I believe that non-surgical sterilization, called "chemical castration", is available now for dog, or almost available. I know that the one-time injection, which was approved and available for a couple of years a few years ago, is about to return (supply/shipper problems took it ff the market... greed may have had something to do with that). One simple injection and a cat or dog is made sterile, permanently. Might be a challenge to manage the entire feral population but would certainly be easier than the surgical solution now. There are some other ways too. You'll have to read the article. Personally I have had vasectomies done on 2 cats, so that's possible. Locating a vet to do one in the U.S. isn't that easy but performing a vasectomy is actually easier than performing a neuter. I never could figure out why neutering became the preferred option. You are certainly not alone in your thought processes. Not everyone sees the benefits of surgical sterilization. Many are coming to realize that despite all of the pleas to spay or neuter and the "facts" strewn about that is is good for the pet, altering their pet is not going to do a thing to help the overpopulation problem.

Actually YES!!! In fact some vets "spay" the animal...but don't take out the uterus. Instead they do a tube tie like in people. The dog still goes into heat and all but can't get pregnant (except for those rare cases, the burned ends open and the egg carries over to the uterus). Alot of cheap or free spay clinics do this. Ask your vet.

And actually...some dogs get pregnant and abandon their pups lol. Thats one reason reputable breeders say it cost so much.

Stopping the dog reproducing isn't the only reason to spay. Most importantly, spaying prevents mammary tumours (if done early enough) and pyometra (potentially fatal uterine infection). There is no point leaving the uterus in if it's not going to be used, it just jeopardises the dog's health.

You sound like you're putting human traits on to animals - remember they are NOT humans, and their minds do not work the same as ours. I have seen many animal's neutered, and I honestly do not believe they are even aware of what has happened to them. They do not have the same awareness of parts of their body that we have, like 'oh my uterus is gone'. Even a 2 year old human child does not have that awareness.

You're right about owning a pet not giving you 'rights' tho - correct, is gives you responsibilities, not rights. And neutering is the responsible thing to do, for your pet's health.

If you are not going to breed your animals, then spaying/neutering is actually the kinder course. It's not like going into heat is a comfortable situation for female animals, or something they can easily ignore. Also, if you don't spay females they are at higher risks for certain types of cancer (not sure about males). Intact males are more aggressive, they mark their territory, they are more prone to straying or running away. All intact animals will try to escape much more often than neutered/spayed.

It is possible to tie a female dog's tubes (a female dog is actually called a *****, but Answers won't let us write that word here!) or to give a male dog a vasectomy, but you'll have trouble finding a vet in the US to do it. I understand it is done in some places in EUrope but I don't have any info on it.

The problem is that if you perform those procedures you don't eliminate any of the other problems intact animals may present like spraying your furniture or a tendency to roam away from home.

You can have Neuticles installed in male dogs- fake testicals so they look intact but they are neutered: http://www.resteddoginn.ca/neuticles.php
But let me assure you, the animals are not depressed after losing their balls as this site claims. They snap back extremely quickly and never seem to notice the difference.

I think she'll forgive you for spaying her, mainly because 1. She doesn't have to go into that horrible heat and 2. It takes away the risk of certain types of cancer.

They do not make doggie condoms.

I actually had a breeder tell me if the ***** spreads her legs she wants to have pups. In every case I have rescued not one has wanted to have anything to do with the pups after getting them weined and the look in their eyes after being spayed and I can honestly assure them it will never happen again tells me it is what they wanted.

Spay her its cheaper than a litter of pups that most shelters wiull require you to pay to have euthanized.

umm why let your dog go into heat every month. the noise alone is worth the money. and for males hey if you want a dog that humps legs and that you need to "milk" then by all means go for it.
