She was the House Democratic Leader and when the Dems took the majority of the House in the election they felt confident in her ability based on her proven leadership skills and voted her as the Speaker of the House.

Gephardt was thrown out in 2004, leaving Nancy as the party head.
That is all that is nessesary to be speaker.
If you are top dog in the party, and the party assumes power, you're the Speaker.

I believe the person is selected by the majority of the house. Pelosi made the most noise as the democratic voice of the house, and therefore won her the most votes.
