Offhand I would say that you have described metabolism, which is not given as a choice. However, I think that it might be equivalent to D. burning calories. It's definitely not excercise (a physical activity, not a biological process) or burning cells (not the name of a biological process), but it could possibly be burning fat, except that I think that's too specific.

the answer to the question is 'none of the above'
the right answer would be "metabolism" if it were listed - it's a much more complex process than "burning calories" but is usually used in the same way.
But - since this is specific - then the right answer would be e.

a is a much larger process, c is true (fat cells) but is too general, d is implying that you can burn something that is just a measurement (you expend energy measured in calories, but you can't burn them)
