He may have an allergy and that is causing him to scratch his fur off.

4 years old is not old for a guinea pig. They usually live 7-8 years, so he is just in the middle of his life!

Take him to vet and see what happens. it shouldn't be too expensive.

Losing fur and having bare spots are not normal. There are different things could be causing this. Some things could be easily treated with a daily medication dispensed from your vet (mites, ringworm, skin infections) or it could be something going on internally with the thyroid or other health issues. Either way he should be seen asap by a vet. Do not try picking up any medications from the pet store for this because most are actually toxic to the animal and make the problem worse. Also on a side note,.....there are some skin parasites that are zoonotic (meaning they can be transmitted to you). Good luck!

If he's scratching himself more than normal and/or shows pain to be touched and picked up, you have a case of mange mites. Take him to the vet for antibiotics. A few doses of Ivermectin or Revolution spaced a few weeks apart can clear it up.

You can find and purchase these drugs without the vet (animal medicines are not regulated by the same laws as human medication), but you would need to learn how to apply the medicine and figure out the dosage.

In the meantime, if he's housed with another pig, separate them until he's cleared up. The mites can spread between the pigs.

If he isn't showing these signs, you may need an exotics vet (yes, guinea pigs are considered exotic animals by vets) to make a diagnosis.

Nothing is wrong, I have a guinea pig too. But it died. Don't know why. It died with someone else. Okay back to your guinea pig. It's normal, it's just shedding and new hair from winter. Try to get it to eat more healthy veggies and fruits and milk or cheese products.
