how to get 47 degree 39' to come out 1.0971. <-- that is the answer but how to put it in TI 83 calculator. It is already in radian mode.

Hi,

If you have your calculator set on degree under its mode, and you type in tan(47+39/60) and press ENTER, you will get a tangent value of 1.0971.

Better check what is going on. 47 39 is less than 1 radian (about 57 deg). It looks like you have the Tangent of 47 39.
