I have worked in a doctor's office for 2 years now and have recently been promoted. The other girls are extremely jelous and keep complaining about everything. They decided to get my over time hours taken away from me so I would make less money and now they are talking behind my back trying to get everyone else to hate me. It is a small office and I can't deal with it much longer. How should I act around them? I have basically been ignoring them the best I can, but I just feel like crying since they all hate me. I don't even enjoy going into work at all because of them. I have NEVER done anything or said anything to any of them-I am a kind person and don't feel I deserve this. I've even considered putting in my 2 week notice...how do I deal with them or what can I do to make this hell stop?

Oh the joy of "Corporate America". I know your pain since I have had similar experiences in employment.

You have handled it as best as possible by ignoring it, unfortunately, that probably will not put an end to it. Plus, because of your apathy, they feel as though they can continue their childish, unprofessional behavior.

How much do you love your job? If not enough, start looking elsewhere but don't put in your notice until you have found soemthing for sure. If you however, do not want to leave then you will need to start taking some action.

First I would definitely speak to these people and let them know that you are aware of it and you do not appreciate it. It borders on "hostile work environment" which is categorized under sexual harrasment laws. Since it is not sexual, it is not clearly a hostile environment, but it is affecting your work adversly. If after speaking to them, things still do not change, I would go to the Doctor and professionally explain things to him/her. I would be as clear and mature as possible without pointing any fingers or becoming a victim about it. I would just let them know that it is affecting your desire to continue working there as the work environment is very negative. I would ask them what they intend to do to address the situation as well.

If after you speak with the Doctor, things stay the same, or get even worse, I would really consider leaving. No job is worth that kind of experience. I know it is "work" and that is why it is called "work" since it usually is not supposed to be a joyride. At the same time, it should also not be filled with petty behavior such as what you describe. It is really up to the Doctor to put an end to it as any good manager would.

Well, good luck. I know right now is tough. Listen, they are already doing things to hurt you, why let them steal anymore of your peace or joy. Be the bigger and more professional person about it. Do the steps I have mentioned and if all else fails, prepare to walk away from this job knowing you did the best you could.

Document everything; every unkind word, action, etc and when you have enough on them, take it to your boss. Be sure to include dates, times and people involved. It will be hard for them to refute your evidence and it will be their downfall.
